AP. 13 October 2002. Australia's biggest peace rally since the Vietnam War.

MELBOURNE -- Thousands of people crammed the streets of Melbourne on
Sunday -- in the country's biggest peace rally since the Vietnam War --
to protest Australian government support for a possible war with Iraq.

The crowd of about 30,000 paused for two minutes' silence for victims of
a deadly car bombing on Saturday outside a nightclub on the Indonesian
island of Bali. The terror attack killed at least 187 people, many of
them believed to be Australian tourists.

Speakers at the rally, in the center of the southern city of Melbourne,
accused Washington of plotting to topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for
economic and political reasons.

"It is not about weapons of mass destruction, it is not about human
rights," said Leigh Hubbarb, a senior labor union official.

"It is about strategic interests, it is about oil."

Australian troops also fought alongside U.S. forces in the Vietnam War,
sparking widespread anti-war protests in cities throughout Australia.
