Russia sends warships to Gulf region: sources

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Feb 28 (AFP) - Three Russian
warships wrapped up exercises in the Sea of Japan on
Friday and were set to head to the Indian Ocean, the
site of major US military buildup ahead of a possible
war in Iraq, navy sources here told AFP.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, did
not say whether the two anti-submarine vessels and
supply ship would participate in potential military
action.

Russia is one of the staunchest opponents to US
threats to use force to disarm Iraq of its alleged
weapons of mass destruction.

Russia had been preparing since December to deploy the
two anti-submarine vessels, the Admiral Shaposhnikov
and the Admiral Panteleyev, as well as a fuel supply
ship, from the far eastern port of Vladivostok to the
Indian Ocean.

Non-official military sources said at the onset of
preparations that the ships would head to the Gulf "to
monitor the zone of a possible military conflict
between the United States and Iraq".

They said the ships were due to arrive mid-March and
their return would depend "for the most part on the
development of the situations in Iraq and North
Korea".

The deployment mission, set to last at least three
months, would be the longest undertaken by a ship with
Russia's Pacific Fleet in the last decade.
