AFP. 28 February 2003. Pakistanis demand peace as solution to Iraqi crisis. KARACHI -- More than two thousand anti-war protestors Friday rallied across Pakistan against a possible US-led invasion of Iraq, with the largest demonstration in the southern port city Karachi. The Karachi rally drew an unexpectedly large crowd of about 2,000 after a shooting attack on policemen guarding the US consulate, in which three policemen were killed. The protestors, including women and children, marched in the city centre carrying white flags, banners and placards inscribed with anti-war slogans such as "Down with Bush and Blair," "No war on Iraq for oil," "Let peace prevail," and "America is full of filth and Germany is light of justice." The rally was organized by the Anti-War Committee coalition of liberal organisations and trade unions. The protesters also condemned the recent wave of sectarian killings and Friday's attack, and demanded the government take steps to save innocent lives. More than 300 opposition party members staged a peace rally in the southern Punjab city of Multan. In North West Frontier Province (NWFP) bordering Afghanistan, students from the Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) observed a black day and rallied in several districts and the NWFP capital Peshawar against military action on Iraq. Protestors chanted slogans against US President George W. Bush, saying: "Bush is responsible for destroying world peace," "Stop aggression against Muslims" and "No war for oil." "Pakistan should take its decisions according to the wishes of its people and should not accept any dictation from US," IJT provincial leader Shahab Hussain told protestors. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
