AP. 1 March 2003. Greek rallies protests EU education meeting, Iraqi
crisis.

ATHENS -- Several thousand students, educators and other demonstrators
staged rallies Saturday to protest a European Union meeting and a
possible U.S.-led war against Iraq.

The demonstrators gathered in central Athens and outside a heavily
guarded hotel complex in the southern seaside suburb of Vouliagmeni.

They were protesting an informal two-day meeting of EU education
ministers that began Saturday, as well as a possible war.

Greece currently holds the EU presidency.

Protesters claim the EU officials could try to weaken public education
systems through cost cutting and other measures.

More than 5,000 demonstrators gathered in central Athens and marched to
the U.S. Embassy, which was surrounded by hundreds of riot police, to
denounce war.

Another 1,500 or so gathered outside the hotel complex.

"We are fighting for a uniform cost-free public education," the marchers
chanted as they marched to the embassy.

Some held banners reading: "these are not ministers of education but of
war and terrorism," and "give money to education, not to NATO's
slaughterhouses."

A similar demonstration was staged outside the U.S. embassy on Friday.

No violence was reported.
