AP. 1 March 2003. Hundreds of demonstrators outside U.S. Army's European
headquarters call for peace.

HEIDELBERG -- Blowing whistles and waving placards, several hundred
demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Army's headquarters here
Saturday to call for a peaceful solution to the crisis with Iraq.

About 1,500 protesters convened outside the gates of Campbell Barracks,
urging U.S. President George W. Bush to avoid war and calling on their
own government not to support possible U.S. military action against
Saddam Hussein.

The demonstration in Heidelberg was one of several staged in Germany
Saturday -- the largest of them in the northern university town of
Goettingen where nearly 2,000 people gathered in the streets to
demonstrate for peace.

"No war for oil" and "Don't let Bush destroy World peace," reads some of
the signs, written in a mix of English and German.

"We're demanding that our government not allow U.S. overflights and that
they make a real peace policy," said Bernd Mesmer, who was handing out
leaflets in German and English.
