AFP. 2 March 2003. Stalin's grandchildren keep distance from Soviet
dictator.

MOSCOW -- Stalin's grandchildren, who never had much contact with their
grandfather, live far from the world of politics and seem neither to be
tainted or gain much from their relation to the Soviet dictator.

"Usually I saw Joseph Visarionovich (born Dzhugashvili) on the tribune
during rallies. He never came to see us," said one of Stalin's two
grandsons, Alexander Burdonsky.

In a deliberate effort to distance himself from his notorious relative,
he took the surname of his mother, Galina, wife of Vasily, who was born
from the Soviet leader's second marriage.

And Burdonsky, 61, went on to pursue a successful career as a producer
at the Red Army theatre in Moscow.

In contrast, his sister Tatiana kept her surname as Dzhugashvili.

Yevgeny, a son from Stalin's first marriage, did the same. He even
baptised his two sons Joseph and Yakov, after his grandfather and
father, who died as a prisoner of war in the hands of the Germans.

His sister, Galina, also kept her famous surname, and confided to the
Russian newspaper Versia that "the more people attacked my grandfather
the more highly I thought of him."

"But I don't pretend to be objective," she added.

His status as the grandson of Stalin has neither influenced his life nor
career, Yevgeny insisted.

"The only thing is that journalists interview me on the anniversaries of
Stalin's birth and death," he told AFP.

After an uneventful career in the Russian military-industrial complex,
he briefly dabbled in politics in Georgia as the head of a small party
of Communist reformers, before retiring. He is 67 today.

But Yevgeny Dzhugashvili admits to one "great source of pride" that one
of his own grandchildren, who lives in Tbilisi, is called ... Joseph
Visarionovich Dzhugashvili.
