AP. 2 March 2003. Thousands hold anti-war protest in India. HYDERABAD -- Nearly 10,000 anti-war protesters marched silently in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Sunday opposing a possible U.S. attack on Iraq and expressing solidarity with the Iraqi people. The protesters, including human rights activists, writers and politicians, carried placards and banners reading, "Drop Bush, not bombs," and "No War." The 10-kilometer (six-mile) march was peaceful and covered parts of Hyderabad, the capital of India's southern Andhra Pradesh state. It was the third protest march in India in the past four days. Nearly 50 percent of Hyderabad's 6 million people are Muslims, and organizers said the silent march was aimed at showing solidarity with the Iraqi people. On Thursday, hundreds of people marched in two Indian cities condemning what they called war mongering by U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. More than 1,000 young communist activists held a 24-hour sit-in outside the heavily guarded U.S. Information Center in the eastern city of Calcutta. Waving signs reading "No Blood for Oil," hundreds of people marched in the southern city of Bangalore opposing a possible U.S.-led attack on Iraq. P.M. Bhargava, convener of the Forum Against War, said Sunday's protest in Hyderabad would be followed by demonstrations in other cities. "This march is a mass movement representing hundreds of thousands of people," he said. "This is not a political movement, but a fight to protect human rights. If the United States attacks Iraq, it will create unprecedented chaos in the world." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
