AP. 2 March 2003. Thousands hold anti-war rally in Hiroshima.

TOKYO -- Over 6,000 Japanese formed the human letters "No War" in a park
in western Japan Sunday in a rally against a possible U.S.-led attack on
Iraq.

Gathering in Hiroshima City, which was devastated by a U.S. atomic bomb
in the closing days of World War II, the chanting protesters carried
brightly colored "We Love Peace" placards.

They filed peacefully under blue skies to spell out the words, "No War
No DU" -- the latter a reference to depleted uranium, a slightly
radioactive heavy metal used by U.S. aircraft in munitions during
bombings in the 1991 Gulf War.

Concerns have arisen that the dust created by hits with depleted uranium
shells cause cancer or metal poisoning. It has also been shown to prompt
kidney failure in higher concentrations.

About 160,000 people were killed directly by the Aug. 6, 1945, atomic
bomb attack on Hiroshima. An additional 65,000 are believed to have died
from the effects of radioactive fallout.

Opposition to war runs strong in Japan, which adopted a constitution
renouncing the use of force in international disputes after World War
II.

Media polls in the last two months have shown Japanese public opposition
to a military strike on Iraq consistent at about 80 percent.
