LISBON, March 5 (AFP) - Military traffic at Lajes air base in the Portuguese Atlantic archipelago of the Azores built up Tuesday with the arrival of some 20 ground attack aircraft, Lusa news agency reported quoting military sources. While the United States strengthened its military force in the Gulf prior to a possible attack on Iraq, the sources said they were unaware of both where the planes were heading and where they had come from. A dozen KC135 in-flight refuelling tanker aircraft based at Lajes this week started operations in the Atlantic. Last week 600 extra beds were sent in to the base for US technicians and operations coordinators, Lusa said. Portugal has authorized the United States to use Lajes base, situated on Terceira island. The defense accord between Lisbon and Washington stipulates that use of the base is automatic in the case of an operation decided on by NATO or the United Nations.
