The official, who declined to be named, said the cabinet had extended the Bundeswehr's mandate to support the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, which was due to run out on Dec. 13, for a further 12 months. It also extended participation in the U.S. Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan by a year, and the navy's mandate to support the U.N.'s UNIFIL peacekeeping operation in Lebanon by half a year. At the start of the second day of a retreat at the Meseberg Palace near Berlin, German cabinet ministers have announced plans to extend three missions by Bundeswehr soldiers. At the moment, 4,500 German soldiers are in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The cabinet ministers have approved an extension of this mission for another year until December 2010, and the number of troops is to remain the same. Bundeswehr mission against pirates in the waters around the Horn of Africa is also to be extended by a year, and participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon is to continue until mid-2010. In these instances, troop numbers are to be reduced. The decisions to extend German troop missions must still be confirmed by the German parliament. Earlier in the retreat, the ministers decided against the continued use of AWACS surveillance aircraft in Afghanistan, citing a dispute over airspace rights over Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. The craft are deployed from a NATO air base in Turkey. =========================== Stop NATO http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stopnato Blog site: http://rickrozoff.wordpress.com/ To subscribe, send an e-mail to: [email protected] or [email protected] Daily digest option available. ============================== --------------------------- ANTI-NATO INFORMATION LIST --^---------------------------------------------------------------- This email was sent to: [email protected] EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?a84x2u.bNM5nn.YXJjaGl2 Or send an email to: [email protected] For Topica's complete suite of email marketing solutions visit: http://www.topica.com/?p=TEXFOOTER --^----------------------------------------------------------------
