The only complication this way is that people wanting to do 3.4 stuff have to 
start working in that branch...i guess C and Scala updates are only v3 changes 
to push that aren't in there now.  i've done some fixes since nov's 3.3

Can i get an "amen brother" from a quorum of committers?   I'll "make it so" 
today if we agree.
