unless you use a cluster aware filesystem, you should unmount the volume on the target host before you export it as you risk filesystem corruption otherwise. If you need the filesystem on more than one host and one of them is the target server itself you could take a look on the ggaoed target as it is able to export the same target over loopback and ethernet ports at the same time and handles concurent access at the same time as all access goes trough it (i couldn't do this with vblade the last time i checked it and kvblade did not compile on my box) also it might be able to give some more verbose or clear error messages... As cluster aware filesystem i use redhats gfs without problems.
