It appears that Jabber (http://www.jabber.org) is the answer to my IM
question. It has numerous clients, is SSL-capable, allows you to specify
your own directory service for looking up users (which is critical to us).
In addition, it's very XML-based, clean C code, multithreaded (though it
uses GNU Pth threads rather than pthreads).
