It probably wouldn't be too hard to change these to not use ns_write, I
think most applications should probably avoid using it at all if
possible, because even if it provides a nice feature of letting the user
know that something is actually happening, even if slowly, there are
other ways of doing so. I have seen, for instance, a php based forum
package that gives a warning page inbetween search request and results
display.

Pound seems really nice. Too bad it has this limitation.
