That's a bit extreme but the fact is that nuisance site members typically post from work for from a home IP, and knowing the IP is very useful for blocking them out or hiding their content. If they were smart people they'd find a better way to occupy their time than to ignore requests to moderate their behavior. If you don't find this useful, fine. But don't tell those of us who *do* find it useful, and have found it useful through actual, real-world experience (for instance, at photo.net, which is an extremely popular site), that it's not useful. A system user_id isn't helpful if you allow users who haven't registered with the site to post content (as slashdot does, for instance).
