I guess he should just bump the version number up to 9.0 then, that'd
look really swell!

When Jeff releases a new version he should pick the version number
based on the usual proper criteria; how extensive the changes or new
features are, whether backwardness compatibility is preserved or
broken, etc.  How many years the codebase sat there unchanged is
irrelevant.
