chmod 666 or 777 does nothing, unfortunately. Changing permissions was the
first thing I tried before posting here.

It's a bare-bones box so I'll start over from a base-install in a bit..

Although, I'm still a bit confused as to how this could happen. Can one of
the APE devs comment / speculate on what may have caused this issue?
