I tried doing it with local.ape-project.org. I added that to the hosts
file as "127.0.0.1 local.ape-project.org" and changed all "localape"
occurrences to "local.ape-project.org". Didn't work.

Using local.ape-project.org as domain in the ape.conf file caused
problems... changing it to "auto" got rid of that error but then I got
"Your variable APE.Config.baseUrl is wrong in Demos/config.js" and I
checked that and it is definitely correct.
