I think more likely that is a symptom of the same problem. Increasing the max channel size increases the size of the data structures that manage the channels, in turn accelerating memory usage and the memory leak problem.
It appears one or more of these data structures isn't properly released after being allocated. The design of the application may influence the problem or make it worse, but I'm not sure as I do not know by which mechanism APE considers a channel to be no longer needed.
