My story is about the same, and I agree. Also successfully switched to node.js
and socket.io.
It's a bit more low-level than APE, so developing is a bit more difficult, but
that also brings more freedom.
You can find A LOT about it on the internet, tutorials, examples, etc. The
community is huge.
Performance of Node.js and socket.io is great! I would check it out if I were
you.

happier... I have no issues at all and very nice compatibility with all
browsers and beside when browser has socket support the speed is unmatchable..
socket.io is well maintained and updated.. and its a project that used by so
many so a lot of help in bug fix.. Even for a person that doesn't know much
about programming javascript I manage to have a very performing application..
let alone somebody that have great acknowledge it would superb .
