FWIW - the JavaScript engine in the APE code (at least version, I have not looked at APE 2) is well-separated from the push server (mod_spidermonkey). There is no reason to ship without SSJS, nor a reason to support only one kind of SSJS.
It should be relatively straightforward to run something based on v8 alongside spidermonkey, if you were so inclined. However, you would not be able to share objects between the two domains unless you serialized them and exchanged them that way. Similarly, you should be able to interpret perl or PHP as separate modules. Assuming you write the modules. :) As for the JSF, we have been using the JavaScript JSF w/o the MooTools stuff for some time. It works. We just wrap in an API that is more suitable for our needs.
