Hello,
My name is Alexandru Blanda and I am a 3rd year undergraduate
student(Computer Science) at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest,
Romania.
I would like to apply for the 2012 Google Summer of Code under the guidance
of your organization. I became interested in the project related to
adopting a language pair. I am very familiar with Python, mainly because of
several projects that I developed as school assignments, and I have a
working knowledge of XML, as well.
Regarding the project idea itself, I would like to ask you a few questions.
The language pair I would like to adopt is French-Romanian. Romanian is my
native language and I have a good knowledge of French. As I understand it,
for the Apertium project it is advisable for the languages chosen for a
pair, to be related. So, with that aspect in mind and given my knowledge of
foreign languages, I chose French-Romanian rather than English-Romanian. In
addition, I considered it to be a good choice given the fact that in the
Incubator there was already some work done on the French-Romanian pair.
After reading the proposed coding challenge and the recommended resources
for the project, I managed to install Apertium and a language pair on my
Ubuntu machine. I installed the Spanish-Romanian pair just to see how
things work. At this point I have a question: is there any resource on the
Apertium wiki that explains how to test the functionality of a language
pair? For the es-ro language pair, that I have installed, I tried using the
following command: "apertium es-ro input output". It worked for a small
text. Is this the way to go?
Also, should I start from scratch and build the dictionaries for the coding
challenge, if I would like to contribute to a language pair that already
exists in the Incubator(in my case French-Romanian)?
Finally, as I figure things out, I would like some feedback on my proposed
schedule for the project. Is it ok to post it on the list?
I am looking forward to your response.
Thanks a lot,
Alexandru Blanda
