Reviewing APNIC Accountability

Dear APNIC Members and stakeholders,
During its face-face meeting in May, the APNIC Executive Council noted
the recent discussions in the APNIC and ICANN communities about
organizational accountability, and also the recent announcement by ICANN
of a new accountability review. The US NTIA's announcement on
transition of IANA oversight responsibilities reminds us of the
importance of accountability for all Internet technical organizations,
including APNIC.
We believe that it is appropriate at this time to review APNIC's own
accountability measures, and the EC has agreed to take the following
steps:
1. A set of questions was added to the recent APNIC Survey, so that
Members and stakeholders could provide views on APNIC's accountability
measures, for future consideration by the EC.
2. The APNIC Secretariat will review existing documentation related to
APNIC accountability, to ensure that existing measures are fully
documented and accessible.
3. In addition, the Secretariat will work with other RIRs to review,
compare and report on accountability measures across all of our
organizations.
4. The EC will discuss this topic again at their face-face meetings in
August and December, and consider further changes or new measures in the
coming year.
We are happy to announce these measures which we feel are important at
this time, and we thank those who participated in the APNIC Survey to
provide further feedback on APNIC performance and future direction. The
results of the survey will be presented to the community at APNIC 38.
