I would agree with Howard that Hawkeye Delicious has the best flavor, at least of any Delicious sports I've eaten. As is often the case, it's hard to beat the original. I look forward to eating from my one tree every year.

Unfortunately, it's not a RED Delicious, at least not as consumers understand the term, under most growing conditions.

Subject: Apple-Crop: Strains of Red Delicious

Hello everyone,
I am going to plant more Red Delicious in 2008.
We were head over heels with Red Delicious in the 1960's and 1970's.
Over the years I yanked them out and replaced them with new varieties.
Now my local and asian customers are clamoring for more than I have now.
We've had Starkrimson, Red Chief and It. I have not been enamored
with any of them in terms of taste.
As those of you over 50 years old can remember, - "Old Fashioned
Delicious" was sweet , palatable and tasteful.
That is the Delicious we desire, - and many customers have echoed that
request.
Has anyone an opinion on the which strains of Red Delicious have the
best flavor?
Thank you.
And the best growing season to all in 2007.
