Hello Scott We have seen this type of dieback several times in the last couple of decades in New Brunswick and some of the varieties and rootstocks have been similar to what has been described. The latest episode was in 2008-9 and it was primarily Marshall Mac and Spur Mac on Mark that was damaged. The most distinguishing feature is the leaf retention, where leaves were retained, branches were dead and many times the entire tree. We had three rapid declines in temperatures that fall.
