This is very rough history. Appleworks for the Apple II came out in 1984. it
went through version 1 in 1984-1985, version 2 around 1987, and version 3 in
1989. It was sold in version 3 up till 1993 or 1994. In 1993 or 1994, a
company in Michigan licensed the code and name for the Apple II Appleworks
and improved it. Version 4 of Appleworks for the Apple II came out in 1994
and version 5 then 5.1 (Appleworks for the Apple II) came out in 1995 or
1996. The company in Michigan (Quality Computers) sold Appleworks 5.1 for
the Apple II in 1998 till Apple revoked their license to use the name. See
the AppleWorks section after the ClarisWorks section.
ClarisWorks for the Macintosh came out in 1991. It was an integrated
package like Appleworks for the Apple II that had a word processor,
database, spreadsheet, and also a drawing and communications program that
Appleworks for the Apple II didn't have. ClarisWorks went through several
versions. Version 2 came out in 1993, version 3 came out in 1994, version 4
came out in 1994, and version 5 came out in 1996 or 1997.
in late 1997 or early 1998, Steve Jobs took over a dying Apple Computer
again. He brought the Claris subsidiary of Apple back into the company of
Apple again. So they took the ClarisWorks 5.0 program and since it was back
into Apple again it was rechristened you will never believe this Appleworks
5.0. This NEW Appleworks 5.0 for the Mac and Windows computer was the exact
same program as ClarisWorks except the opening screen was changed. The basic
software code and how it worked didn't. A version 6 of Appleworks for the
Macintosh and Windows came out in 1999 or 2000.
That is the basic history lesson. My dates may not be exactly correct
but that is the general idea of what happened.
