AOL terminated Apple II accounts on Nov 1, 1994. One can still visit
www.aol.com using an Apple II. I even have subscribed to an AOL usergroup
using my Apple II. But one can no longer subscribe to an account or
access it at AOL using an Apple II.
I use ProTerm 3.1 to log onto my ISP which offers a Unix shell account.
You could find out if your Apple IIe could use ProTerm by visiting
www.intrec.com.
