The old Mac OS allowed 32 characters per name, and has done so for a 
long time (back when MS-DOS was allowing only 8.3 characters). Mac OS X 
allows lots and lots per name, don't know how many.

GS/OS, of course, is limited to 15 characters per filename, which may 
be what you were thinking of (to get back to Apple II topic).
