Front card port is for additional memory (1/2 Meg to 2Meg--although it was advertised as being able to up the card's memory to 16Meg--once the chips to do so were manufactured); the back port is for RGB video--perhaps digital, too--have to reference an AE brochure. Yes, they can be used at the same time. The additional memory is nice in AppleWorks on occasion, but Quickie Scanner software doesn't seem to work with more than 1Meg of memory.
