Anyone know what it is?
It's a real time clock card. It's not required in a IIgs since it already has a built-in clock, but you can use it in an Apple II, II+ or IIe. I believe the Clockworks cards are compatible with the old Thunderclock, which means it's supported by ProDOS without having to load extra drivers.
Also, is true that the ROM 03 version of the IIgs has 1MB of RAM built in? I read this on the web:
-----------------
The final released hardware revision was known as the "ROM 3," which came out in August 1989. The ROM 3 IIGS included a revised motherboard, so it was not possible to upgrade earlier machines to it by replacing chips. It included more updates to the software included in the ROM, as well as an improved motherboard design featuring 1 MB of built-in RAM rather than 256 KB (although all revisions could be upgraded to a total of 8 MB). The motherboard design was also designed to increase audio quality and allow more power to be delivered to cards in the expansion slots.
-----------------
Actually the ROM 3 board (aka the 1MB motherboard) has 1.125MB of RAM, 1MB of fast RAM and 128KB of slow RAM. The slow RAM runs at 1MHz and is the equivalent of the first 128KB in an 8-bit Apple II. The 256KB motherboard (ROM 0 and ROM 1) has only 128KB each of fast and slow RAM.
If so, I won't be quite so upset that the memory card I just bought only had 256K of RAM instead of 1 MB. But if anyone has upgrade chips they wish to part with I am interested. :)
Thanks a lot!
Matt
Is it an Apple branded card? Apple only ever made one memory card for the IIgs memory expansion slot, which could be expanded in 256KB steps to a maximum of 1MB. These cards are worth very little today, because most people want more than 1MB of RAM. Note that 1MB is enough to run almost all IIgs software, including System 6, but a few programs require more. Also if you want to load the system up with lots of drivers, desk accessories and inits you want 2MB.
