Hi James--

Unless your GS has a built in hard drive, you have to start the computer
up from a disk.  The "bouncing apple" is normal on the GS when there's no
software to start from.  Did the GS have any drives attached to it?  Which
kind, and how many?  Was there any software that you also rescued?

It'd also be helpful to know how much memory there is in the computer.  If
you open up thecomputer (push in on the tabs at the back of the lid and
lift towards you) see if there's any board in the slots.  The memory board
would be (as you're facing the front of the computer) the slot closest to
the front right.
