The original serial port problem had to do with timing issues when using a modem over 1200 baud. The crystal Apple used wouldn't handle the timing properly, so they offered an upgrade--I think it was free for a time. I don't know if anyone ever had aftermarket upgrades for those folk who ended up with //c's after Apple ended their program. :)
