This is a common problem with these printers. The bar that the print head slides on gets a dry spot on it causing the printer to lose home. Lubricate the bar with oil and that will fix it. WD-40 will not work. I use my used mobil one car oil on my printers and that synethic oil makes the carriage slide like new.

It must be a hardware malfunction - maybe a mechanical sensor out of adjustment somewhere.(?) Any ideas?
