That quote is now considered an urban myth. :`( But the wonderful thing is that it is believable. That quote was from the days of the Apple ][+, which was designed for 48 kB. A largish chunk of that was dedicated to hardware (video, system software, addressing peripheral cards, etc.), so a 640 kB machine would probably have 15 to 20 times as much RAM for software to play with. Which isn't bad for a machine of limited utility. Not only that, but I very much doubt that people thought that huge chunks of that memory would be used for graphics. For example: 1024x768 by 24 bit colour uses 2.25 MB for the framebuffer. There is probably two pages (so 4.5 MB), then there is the buffering done by the operating system (eg. Mac OS X will buffer the entire contents of every window), and who knows what else. This is clearly a huge step beyond the Apple II, and one which is not at all obvious twenty some years ago. And it is somewhat wasteful in my humble opinion.
