It doesn't look like I can and I see all the disclaimers. All I can say is that back then my company was the proud owner of an IBM XT with 512k, soon to be upgraded to 640k. This machine with a printer and a 10 meg HD cost over $10,000.
I was alive when it was said, it was widely reported and at the time people nodded sagely and said, how wise. In those days most programs still ran on 64k. A 64k program seemed large. 640k was monstrous (and very expensive). A lot of people were booting write protected 5.25" floppies and putting their data on another 5.25" disk, in a second disk drive if one was on a state of the art machine.
