it depends on the tv, some headphone outputs will work well if you adjust the volume
correctly.
others like the one i have need a proper load or the amplifier doesn't work properly
particularly
for middle and higher pitches causing a distortion. i'd try it with just an adapter
cable first.
i'd say get a 3.5mm to rca cable, find out which one of the 2 jacks is actually being
driven (if the
tv has a mono output only one will have a signal), connect a "Y" cable to that can
connect the other
2 jacks on the "Y" cable to the stereo, or rca inputs if one of your machines has rca
sound
connectors. if not then get another 3.5mm to dual rca cable and hook it up to the
splitter. you'll
want to try and get rca cables with the correct gender, in this case the "Y" cable
should either be
all female or one male and 2 female depending on what you are running it into. you
might have to
use some rca fem>fem cables or connectors. try radio shack or a stereo store.

if you do get distortion, i can build you a box with a proper load for about $6+ any
cables you want
with it (i can get many of these cables surplus) or an active unit which you probably
don't need for
$18 and in either case it can run the mono output to both channels.

just start with the volume low and the gain on the mac all the way up and watch the
signal level,
adjust it a little too high and turn down the gain on the mac a bit. it's best to run
a fairly high
level signal through the cable to reduce hum pickup (but you don't want to overload
the macs input
which can cause distortion and in severe cases damage, though you'd probably have to
have the volume
set pretty high and leave it that way which would be silly).

it's also possible for the tv set to have some "leakage" current which will induce
hum as well.
that problem is a little harder to fix but it can be done (the first thing to do is
make sure the
outlet is correctly wired, and then if the tv cord isn't polarized try it the other
way though most
are, and of course make sure the mac has a proper ground). try the simple cables
first, you'll need
most of them either way, if you then decide you need a box from me let me know, or if
you need some
more technical help i'm always happy to try to help through email.
