I use HOOK, a software hack, that "unhooks" the drives that you select (even 
slot 6, drive B,) from being recognized by the computer.  A similar command 
"rehooks" up the phantom drive(s).  Hook is a SoftDisk program from the 8-bit 
SoftDisk that Sheppy sells.  I recall that there is something similar for the 
GS/OS, but it was a bit more permanent, so I never installed it.  A quick and 
simple solution is simply to place a ProDOS formatted disk in the 5.25" drive.  
The GS/OS will recognize the disk quickly and move on to the next volume, all 
without the grinding sound.
