Shouldn't it be possible to change the "respawn" bit on the particular inittab entry to something which will allow you to kill getty? Then you could restart getty manually when you're done. Or does getty respawn itself each time you logout?
Hadn't thought of that, but then again, it's either load emacs and change one character in the file and then init q to re-read /etc/inittab, or keep having to kill/rerun getty each time manually. It _would_ probably respawn on a logout, but I'm not sure, haven't tried it, I always have getty set to respawn.
But I agree that it isn't entirely convenient.
Yeah - it isn't <grin>. That, and most of the software I download is in shrinkit archive form anyway. For my particular setup, it's much more convenient to just use Kermit. Good idea with the respawn bit though, I might try that to see what happens on a logout. Actually, now that I think about it, getty probably won't respawn, because it's what handles the login/logout on that line anyway, and if you're killing it, then there wouldn't be anything listening to ttyS0. ..... I don't know for sure, I'm tired, too tired to think....
