POKE 49162,0 isn't necessary in all but a few cases. You only need it if you
do have a card in slot 3 (other than a 80 column card, that is) and have used
it recently. That soft switch ($C00A) works in conjuntion with $C00B to
select if you want to use the mainboard's ROM space at $C300-$C3FF or the
slot 3 card's built-in ROM (which sits at that address space). $C00B selects
the card's ROM (in order to use it with PR#3 or IN#3, for example), and $C00A
selects again the mainboard's ROM (in order to use the 80 column firmware and
make PR#3 activate the 80 column mode). If nothing is done after power-on or
reset, the mainboard's ROM is selected by default.

In a nutshell: if you don't have a //e or //gs with a physicall card in slot
3, the POKE 49162,0 isn't needed at all. And, of course, in a //c or //c+,
there's no need, also, because it has no slots.
