Greetings. I am confused. I was given an Apple IIGS system recently, and I'm beginning to fiddle around with it (see my two recent posts where I declare my newbie status). The system came with an Apple II SCSI Card and a 42MB hard drive with System 6.0.1 installed. As I indicated in my first post, I was encountering a $0201 error when booting 6.0.1 from the hard drive. I have been unable to clear this error even when I attempt to boot with Desk Accessories turned off (holding down the shift key). I have a floppy drive and System 5.0.4 disks (I don't have 6.0.1 on floppy). I can boot into the floppy just fine, when I set it as the startup disk.

I am learning that the 0201 error is related to insufficient memory-- either physically, or through some software glitch, made inaccessible. I have taken the suggestion from this list and some online FAQs to try to determine how much RAM I have. The Control Panel suggests I have 512KB. But this is what is confusing me on two counts: 1) the system as I received it was connected to the boot-able hard drive running 6.0.1--I have learned that it is not recommended (or even possible?) to run 6.0.1 on less than 2MB RAM; 2) the IIGS has an Apple II SCSI card, and the manual I have says the card won't work on a IIGS with LESS than 768K of RAM.

So, how much RAM do I really have? And is it possible that some of it has gone bad? I am assuming that there is 256KB on the mobo (4 x 64K chips of "Standard RAM"). I confirmed this by checking the Control Panel with the expansion card removed. Sure enough, 256KB. The expansion card has 8 chips of Texas Instruments TMS 4256-15NLA. Does anyone know what the size of these chips are? I couldn't find that info online. The 6 other chips appear to be controllers (e.g., I discovered that a 74F04 is a "Hex Inverter"). If, however, those 8 chips are only 32K each that would be 256 for a total of 512. But then again, how is it that the computer was apparently successfully running a SCSI card and a hard drive that booted into 6.0.1?

Since I have you here, I have System 5.0.4 on floppy that appears to work fine to boot the machine--though occasionally I have also experienced a 0201 error when trying to open a Control Panel from the Finder. Should I even be attempting to us GS/OS with 512K of RAM? I understand 5.0.4 doesn't require as much RAM.

Thanks again for your help. This is very interesting, though I feel like I'm on the learning curve!
