Although GS/OS 6.0.1 will run in 1.25 MB, you will not have enough memory left to even copy a floppy disk in one pass. If 4 MB is available, it will be used by the system for such things as copying from a SCSI CD-ROM to a hard drive. There are many other things that make it useful, such as setting up a 1-2 MB ramdisk and still have 2-3 MB of ram left for machine functions. Also, my card is fully DMA compatible. : > 2) the IIGS has an Apple II SCSI card, and the manual I have says : > the card won't work on a IIGS with LESS than 768K of RAM. : : This is probably a function of the OS and the drivers. I think : that GS/OS 6.0.1 will load on a 512 kB machine, but it leaves no : RAM for applications (or even the Finder!). This is a very important piece of information, however he said the SCSI card tells him to have 768K. SCSI is a very high powered system and requires quite a bit of ram to function properly. : > expansion card has 8 chips of Texas Instruments TMS 4256-15NLA. If so, you can probably bring it up to 1 MB : with very little effort and expense. (The type of RAM used in : Apple's 1 MB board, for example, can be found in many early IBM : compatibles.) Upon some research, the 24 chips needed to bring the card to a full 1 MB would cost in the realm of $17. So, for little more than 3x that you can quadruple the ram size with my card. Also, I will take $5 off if you'd like to trade in the 1 MB card with 256Kx8 on it. I use them for prototyping practice. : > Should I even be attempting to us GS/OS with 512K of RAM? : : Probably not. The 1 MB card was made at a time when GS/OS was merely a desktop interface to 8-bit programs. Not suitable for heavy usage. :o) Bill Garber -- Apple2list is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Apple2list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/apple2.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:apple2list@mail.maclaunch.com> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/apple2list%40mail.maclaunch.com/> iPod Accessories for Less at 1-800-iPOD.COM Fast Delivery, Low Price, Good Deal www.1800ipod.com
