I think it's absolutely great that there is a collectible market for Apple II hardware. I think it shows just how much of an impact the technology had on people. I look at ebay quite often, and there ARE people out there making money off of Apple II hardware -- and I think that's fine.
There's a market because people find value in it, even after all these years. If there were no market, more of the hardware would hit the landfills and recycling centers, never to be used again. Now, here's the great part. If you want the hardware, you don't HAVE to buy it on the collector's market on ebay. Go to some yard sales, or thrift shops, or pawn shops. Odds are, you will still find a lot of the hardware still out there. You might find a IIe or IIgs with a couple of nice "rare" cards in them too. I've found that a lot of co-workers still have Apple II systems sitting idle in garages or attics -- just ask and you may find they are happy to give these to you. You can still find very cheap Apple II gear on ebay too, especially if you find a seller within driving distance to you so you can avoid shipping costs. Like I said, ROM01 Apple IIgs' are very common and quite cheap to pick up. I see more people paying for complete systems. I personally see it as a very heathly and positive thing that there's a market out there for the beloved II line as a collectible, yet it's still quite easy to pick up the hardware easily and cheaply if you simply want to get back into it for the fun of it. There are components that simply ARE rare to find -- that's why they command a higher price. SCSI cards, CPU Accelerators, etc. There just weren't a lot of them produced and sold because they were expensive, and because most people didn't NEED them to use the Apple II. And today that still holds true -- you done NEED a SCSI drive or Zip Chip or TransWarp to use and enjoy the Apple II.
