I wonder if anyone can show us any *** usefull and needed *** JAVA apps
(                                      ^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^)
which would make it desirable to include any kind of JAVA support
in some future version of Arachne.

  Nope, it's not JS, since it displays fine in lynx, links,
and dillo. I'm not sure why Arachne can't display it.

Insight.exe does not do the mail downloads or uploads.
Core.exe does both Pop3 and SMTP.

Core.exe does these tasks.....

1) Pop3 download
2) SMTP upload
3) create the TBS (To Be Sent), outgoing massages
_____________________________
d9xt!
Insight does these tasks....

1) convert mail messages from plain text to HTML
2) convert the directory listing of inbox, outbox, etc... to HTML
3) move mail messages from one 'folder' to another.
4) delete messages (or move to trash folder)
5) 'detatch' any attached files
6) attach files to the TBS created by core.exe

Clipped from the above page.....

<body bgcolor="#000000" onload="init();" topmargin="2"
 leftmargin="2" marginwidth="2" marginheight="2">

Notice what's missing ???

text="what_color"

Without a textcolor defined, Arachne uses white by default.

We can't see the text because the particular cell within the table
containing this text has a background color which is also white.

<TD ROWSPAN="2" VALIGN="top" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF">

I will look into fixing this for the next version.

Yes, and if a marked text (link) is wrapped to the next row it is
not rendered at all.

These are known bugs of beginning css implementation. But if somebody

I have been using several mail transport agents under DOS. But
always returned to core.exe, Arachne is the best one.

smtpop12 (and older versions)
fdsmtpop
tcpmail (probably best)
ukappp (no idea which of the 163 files actually does the job)

Download sites should be easy to find through Google. Look at Dev's
"Interesting DOS programs" first.

BTW: Arachne would give a marvellous mail transport agent if she
were not so bloated with http and html stuff: Authors obviously
thought that users need a www browser and a GUI ;) Or that internet
software should be useable as database server as well ;))

Great. But I'm not sure whether this Stacker detection method is
the best possible. Does it work with all versions, or only with
Stacker 4? Unfortunately, I don't use Stacker (of course I can
install Stacker 3 bundled with my DR-DOS, if it is needed).

After studying RBIL, I think that INT 21h/AX=4404h could serve
as a better Stacker test. Does anyone on the list use Stacker?

  If textcolor not exist
  then textcolor == (bgcolor - 888888) ?

  Ok, so my pseudocode semantics might not be the greatest,
but I would think that should do the trick... it works on
the limited number of colors I just tried, anyway... or
would it be easier to EOR the background color?

  I can do my banking via Netscape 4.79 or Mozilla 1.0,
though I can actually even transfer funds from paypal to the
bank using NS 3.04.

  Until last night (I thought) I had to do UPS shipping
label printing via Netscape 4.79. Last time I tried
Mozilla, I got an error message that I was using an
usupported browser.
  This e-mail prompted me to try Mozilla again, and UPS has
become Mozilla friendly in the meantime. :-)

  I have still never found a single thing for which I "need"
Windows...

Yes, yes. I was thinking a similar thing.

Arachne would make a great database server, if only it wasn't so bloated
with all that communications stuff.

And then there's the people who use it as a DOS desktop menu ...

There are spiders all over the world, and every one of them spins a
unique web.

With UKA_PPP do:

a) For pop3:
tcpport.exe pop3.mail.domain 110 x_popn.exe user:password

b) For smtp:
tcpport.exe smtp.mail.domain 25 x_mailn.exe

Both x_*.exe are written in QuickBasic and work very well in this
80286.

1.71UE has been altered several times and they are not at Arachne
home-page.
The first 1.71UE version I downloaded was stored on floppy and
installed.
Later on wwwman.exe was altered, which I downloaded separately.
Also printing has been altered => new release

Perhaps Glenn will make summary of the releases and where to find them.

Wishing you all a very fine 2003 and a bright future to Arachne.

Bastiaan
