Again.... are you certain that's the correct 'base address' ??
IMO,
You need to use a utility such-as 'portinfo'
to see exactly what you really do have.
(the web address of where you can get it is in the attached report)
In the attached ZIP is a copy of the report
just generated by 'portinfo' for my system.

Scratch that.
http://www.comminfo.com/ seems to have gone "belly-up". :((
However...
I was able to find several D/L sites for the utilities in question.
This is one of them,

Try this setting: change from D2 to D0 <-zero
Some modems disconnect when DTR is dropped using EPPD.
D0 will stop the DTR drop.

How can one copyright a cartridge? A cartridge is only a container
provided with pre-packaged components and designed for the facilitating
of the loading of something into some kind of piece of equipment in order
to make it work. Unless the container and its components have some
unique features and characteristics and component materials which make it
quite unlike anything else, then how can it be copyrighted or patented?
One ink cartridge is just like any other ink cartridge in basic concept
and design. Its physical dimensions and shape might be different. It
would seem to me that it would be lawful for any manufacturer to copy the
ink cartridges designed by their competitors. BTW, it is perfectly lawful
for any manufacturer to copy and market blank recording cassettes and
blank film cassettes and blank VHS and BETA recording cassettes. These
devices are all cartridges. Also it is perfectly legal for any
manufacturer to copy and market cartridges for small arms, regardless of
whatever company first developed and designed them. In the US everyone
has the right to reload empty cartridge cases with any primers, powders,
and bullets he wants.

I wonder why Michael can't manually unsubscribe list members who want to leave.
While the Arachne list is helpful for information on Arachne and some other
subjects, I don't think we want to hold people hostage who want out.

I was inclined to say "It's a winmodem", but something similar happened
to me last night. Arachne failed to connect two or three times in a row,
then I gave up and went to bed.
I'll investigate futher this evening.
Is it hard to find a real modem, or is it hard to find a CHEAP real modem.
If someone really wants a real modem, then he should try an external one.
It is more expensive, but worthy.
I use a US Robotics 56k Faxmodem. Bought this spring. Brand new.
At the store, they had also a sophisticated internal US Robotics .., but
although they claimed it was a real modem, I went for the external one

Subject: Re: actiontec modems
There's a port number 0 below; was the modem autodetected? Did you try the
autodetect (from Setup choose ppp-wizard)?
where are the other com ports (perhaps check your bios setup to enter some
standard config com1=2f8 com2=2e8 com3=3f8 com4=3e8 (if I'm not mistaken;
real standard numbrs are mentioned on arachnes "internal ppp-support page);
if bios configuration is set to "auto" sometimes other values are assigned
leaving arachne with an unrecognised port, where maybe miniterm just sends
its output and makes the modem dial while epppd doesn't get the proper
configuration to read the ip address. I think msd would be the way to find
out your other port addresses in dos6x, the bios setup can usually be
accessed by pressing <del> while the system is counting its memory during
startup (or repeatedly pressing <del> from the moment you switch on until
you see some options menu, if there is some graphics display)
rule for the bios setup: make sure your onboard comports are 1 and 2 or
just 1, but avoid assigning 2 or 3 when 1 is open. If your comports are not
"onboard" but on a (ide) controller, you may have to check jumper settings
on that board, but better check the bios first. (usually "extendd bios
setup" or "integrated peripherals")
good luck,
B

Agreed, but some Lexmark's incorporate the heads in the cartridge and might
be patented. Even so it would seem strange that what is essentially a refill
service would be illegal.

Subject: Quicker loading pages
Thanks for your effort and suggestions Steve, to make my pages load
quicker. New.htm looks just as good on my 14" screen as it did before,
so I did some minor editing and planned to put it on the web as such.
Then I started working on the homepage, but the two bottom pictures at
150x100 res. took up only 5K ea. and looked terrible even on my screen.
Now I'm confused. You mentioned 10K for tumbnails. How do you get a
reasonably sharp picture into a small area? I always assumed that a
smaller picture automatically sharpened up. Furthermore, you mentioned
that your example probably was too low res. for a real-life application.
Because of my small screen I cannot confirm that. But if I go that
route I have to fall back on my own mangled jpeg to provide the high res.
option, as I only have ftcolor to crop. This may be the best way to go,
or do you know of a freely available cropping program? If there would
be a way to get my onboard video setup working again, I could probably
use Linux. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

In most civilysed countries a gun owner is classified: a criminal

Hi All
the key to democracy is transparancy. So in a democratic society there
ought to be no secrets (and no lies)... and hence no 'secret service'.
Does anyone of you live in a democratic country? I think not... because
to my knowledge there is no country with a government without a 'hidden
agenda' or without a 'secret service'.
Whitout press, radio and TV there would not be any transparancy at all.
But in most countries the 'media' are doing a bad job.
Here in Holland radio and TV just give 'entertainment' and talkshows
covering next local elections. TV news is 15 minutes... 10 minutes local
news... 3 minutes for dissasters like volcanos, storms and floading.
2 minutes on war against Iraq and terrorism.
Our newspapers do much better: all facts in 'heise.de/ etcetera' I did
already know.
CNN and CBS can be viewed by satellite... oh boy, what a trash is that.
Not a single critical argument... just 'patriotism' and political
correctness :-(( I stopped viewing these broadcasts but only once a week
I view. Just to see how bad the American people is informed... and how a
new 'anti communist McCarty-ism' is creeping in. Communism is gone, now
the 'anti-moslim-ism = anti-terrorism' is creeping in, smashing legal
and human rights.
****** From here it is just a hundred miles to Germany and a few hundred
miles to the UK. About 25 German TV-stations can be viewed and they do
give the background to the world news. The UK hides behind decoders to
prevent the 'continentals' viewing Brittish TV... but BBC radio can be
listened to. The BBC is critical, although a bit biased to US point of
view. To US citysens the BBC could open there eyes. BBC can be found on
the internet, short wave and for Europe on medium wave and long wave
broadcast frequencies too.
****** Germany world service 'Deutsche Welle' can also be heard world
wide on short wave (English service is also provided) and has a very
good coverage of the main 'world issues'. An internet service is also
available.
The world can not stop George W, maybe the American people are able to
do it... but they must be well informed.

Jimmy, are you sure that your modem is on IRQ3? If so, how is this? That
is the interrupt for COM2. A PCI hardware modem should have an interrupt
in the range 9-11 by preference, especially since that IOPORT is in the
normal PCI range. It looks to me like miniterm is coping OK with this, but
I guess EPPD doesn't like it. If you have the modem somehow assigned to
IRQ3 in the BIOS, then you must also disable COM2 in the BIOS.
Do you by any chance have TWO modems in the box, the old one and the new
one. Are you sure that it is the new modem that is doing the dialing, and
not the old one...
What else is in the machine? Which slot is the PCI modem in? What does the
BIOS report as the interrupt usage for PCI cards?
I can't imagine how you can get your modem on IRQ3. I have seen very few
machines with a BIOS that allows you to assign that interrupt to a PCI
slot.
There is a DOS program that comes with the Actiontec modem that reports
which IRQ/IOPORT the modem is on. It is PMDMCFG.EXE, and I can send you a
copy later (tomorrow), or you can look for it on the installation disc (if
you have one), or on the Actiontec web site.
PS: add W2 to your init string so that the modem reports CONNECT speed
rather than serial port speed.

I have found that "re-sizing" the graphic to the exact size specified
in the web page will do the trick best. It will give you exactly the
right size graphic for ther way you want it shown. PictView will do
that nicely (freeware), as will many others.

In Oz we have a similar selection of rubbish, but we also have one
almost-unbiased radio network (Australian Broadcasting Commission - ABC),
and two almost unbiased TV news services (ABC and SBS), both government
funded to a large extent, and both bitterly criticised by governments of
all flavours for being biased against them.
I figure if all political viewpoints complain, then they must be
running close to truth much of the time.
