Subject: Wanted - Electronic Engineer

Hi Bastiaan (or any other experimenters),

As you are playing around with electronic stuff, would you please
consider an additional project?

I need a cheap design (made from salvaged, common electronic parts would
be ideal) for a *pass through* box, to be used to check the operation of
basic computer hardware (like mouse, keyboard, drives, printers, etc).
The box should have connectors for all the possible *normal* computer
accessories AND have switches mounted to turn off the source of power
from reaching the connectors (each connector should have its own switch).
I'll also need to run jumpers from the power cords and connectors inside
the computer (to check the drives), but for that I'll just add some
home-made plugs and install them in place of a card. So, the box should
have ALL the connectors included.

It sounds a lot like overkill, but I want to use it with handicapped kids
and need some extra protection built in (partly as protection and partly
as an extra step to reinforce the need for safety). I want it to be as
foolproof as possible, but yet be built with common hardware (so that
anybody could copy the idea and use locally available parts). I don't
know if the kids could hurt themselves with the 5 or 12 volt coming from
the power supply, but I'd like to create protection from that.

What I want to do is to give handicapped kids some basic tasks (like
checking and cleaning components), but completely isolate the actual
computer from the kid. This is because some kids can't maneuver (for
example, with wheelchairs) around a desktop computer. With extension
cables and a *pass through* box, they would only need access to the box -
much easier for them to do without assistance.

The box should run on a 386 or a 486. It's only purpose is to provide an
easy way to connect peripherals and check them for operation. I expect to
normally use the 386 as the test machine and an additional 486 as a
regular computer which would contain the operational instructions (as
well as other programs).

The instructions should use only text and low-level graphics (for
example, 16 color BMP). Hypertext links would be used between pages. All
of it will run as an Arachne application.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

Bob

   I wish !

Not Arachne's fault, but I have at least one client to whom I cannot
(by any means I have tried) send more than one attachment with Arachne.
Arachne encodes and attaches multiple attachments, and sends the correct
number of bytes through my ISP's mail server, but my client only gets
one of them still attached. Clearly, HIS mail server is only letting
one attachment through.

I have to remember to ZIP everything into one attachment when sending
work to him.

Has anybody else come across this ?

Regards,
        Ron

Ron,

I've never heard of such a thing. Rather than checking your client's
mail server, check how he has his software configured. Or you could
telnet into his mail [having him enter his own user name and password
without you looking] on the server, and see how many attachments get
that far [after you sent a mssg with 2 or 3 small attachments].

However, I have yet to manage to know everything there is to know, so I
could be wrong. <G>

l.d.

P.S. If you want a "mail to" that has 8 attachments possible [max in
Arachne] let me know & I'll ship one out.

I just checked to see what kind of filenames you might be trying to save.

ftp://updates.redhat.com:21/8.0/en/os/SRPMS/xpdf-1.01-10.src.rpm

There's the problem.

On my setup the 'saveas' page will attempt to save this file to....
c:\1recv\xpdf-1.01-10.src.rpm

That is an invalid filename in DOS.

Change it to this and all will go as planned.
c:\1recv\xpdf101.rpm

The originating address is indicated above. The whois
info on that address shows it to be registered in
Yugoslavia. If you're running Linux, simply do
'whois [EMAIL PROTECTED]' to find all the
contact info.

I think I have a clue here,

Last year I posted a message about an Arachne-using friend who had
received a message with hundreds os adresses in the to: field. Insight
doesn't like that, so I went to use dosshell to delete the file.
This guy is an active member of this global villages Esperanto society.
(These people originally invented the Global Village based on an
international language they composed of most big languages)

I'll check with him if this is Esperanto...

http://rolee.exec.ws=20

I did Whois with the referred URL in the email, not with the sender.

I didn't had seen here such kind of messages before.

Somebody posted yesterday about differences between ISO1 and ISO 2.=20

It remains the doubt about what language the message is from: Czech or Ser=
bia ?

Thanks for your contribution about the source
