By the way, I have one more technical question (related to DGIs, not to the "zero address"): I noticed that DOS commands from DGI definitions in MIME.CFG are converted to lowercase when they are written to $ROURA$.BAT for execution. The OS will limit the maximum size of a partition. If you have a Phoenix BIOS, BIOS flash upgrades can be obtained from Micro Firmware (www.firmware.com). Make sure that you copy down the complete information on the Phoenix BIOS before you contact them. (The information can be seen on the boot-up screen. You may have to do multiple boots to copy down all the information.) Disk Manager by OnTrack is a software method of providing for large HD's (larger than 504 MB). From what I understand, it manipulates information on the HD to make the computer think that everything is on a HD less than 504 MB. I believe that most HD's come with similar programs. I know that Western Digital HD's do. A word of caution about software that makes HD's think that they are smaller than 504 MB: If you want to replace the HD with another, you need to remove the program or your HD will not be accessible (I know!). I have a Promise Drive Max card in this computer that modifies the BIOS on boot-up so that it is capable of using 125 GB HD's. Unfortunately, Promise no longer makes this card, which is a same --- it cost less than $20. Although the BIOS is now capable of a 125 GB HD, M$-DOS 6.22 limits the useful logical drive size to 2 GB. I have 2 drives in this computer, one a 800 MB drive and the second a 30 GB drive. The second has 3 logical drives on it, one approximately 1.8 GB and I can't remember what sizes the other two are. Assuming that your 386 is IDE/EIDE capable, or that you have a IDE/EIDE controller card, you should be able to install a second HD in your computer as a slave drive. Once that is formatted and partitioned, you can copy your files from the first HD to the new one. First of all, make sure that you can copy the uncompressed files from the old HD, not the files in compressed form that DriveSpace uses. You don't have to have multiple partitions, but you *do* need one primary active partition. *I believe this old machine is IDE capable or has an IDE controller card as a 4x CD-ROM is installed as D:(does not a CD-ROM require an IDE capabilty/controller card/cable?) and the 340 MB HDD was itself an upgrade HTH Roger Turk Tucson, Arizona Andy wrote: . > Hi all, . > I have a Very old computer... . > it is an AT-clone with a 386 DX 40mhz cpu . > it used to run Win3.11 before I deltree'd Win3.11 out of frustration . > yet it still has all it's Win3.11 software that I hope to use again when . > I re-install Win3.11 . > now my OS om it is Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 . > I have a number of new DOS apps that take up the room Windows used to . > take . > my 340 MB drive is packed and I am also using DriveSpace . > I need a new HDD . > where do I go from here? . > what is your recommendation for a new HDD that will fit my old AT case . > and BIOS(which has the option of a user defined drive(as was the 340 MB)) . > ((in my BIOS user defined opt. it asks for cylinder, head, etc. . > numbers)) ??? . > what size and model should i be looking for? . > and where would I purchase/obtain it? . > if I got a larger HDD installed, would i need to partition it? . > I've heard MS-DOS 6.22 needs a smaller or equal to 2 GB partition . > yet Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 is unlimited? what about Win3.11? . > and if I did obtain a new larger HDD how would I transfer the data from . > my current 340 MB HDD?? . > I do have a parallel port iomega 100 MB zip drive yet how do I do a . > *DOS* back-up of my 340 MB HDD then restore to a new HDD using it? is it . > some DOS DISKCOPY command? will this allow me to smoothly back-up my . > current 340 MB HDD? with prompts when each zip disk gets full? . > please remember I only have DOS(Caldera DR-DOS 7.03) currently on this . > machine... right now it is not possible to re-install Win3.11 because . > my/the HDD is so full, so are there *DOS* back-up programs available and . > if so where would i obtain them or would some sort of DOS DISKCOPY command . > in conjunction with my zip drive be sufficient?? . > thanks in advance for any help rendered, . > andy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 13:17:02 -0400 (EDT) From: ANDY <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: AT HDD upgrade >From the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list: Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 09:03:20 -0400 From: Charles Angelich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: AT HDD upgrade (: Hello Andy - At 10:59 PM 6/16/2003 -0400, you wrote: > I have a Very old computer... > > it is an AT-clone with a 386 DX 40mhz cpu > > it used to run Win3.11 before I deltree'd Win3.11 out of frustration What was the problem that caused all this frustration? it became a corrupt copy (specifically/finally, it would not let me access the Control Panel properly) > yet it still has all it's Win3.11 software that I hope to use again when >I re-install Win3.11 > > now my OS om it is Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 W31 is faster using DRDOS, should work well. > I have a number of new DOS apps that take up the room Windows used to >take > > my 340 MB drive is packed and I am also using DriveSpace In the future I would recommend NOT using DriveSpace. > I need a new HDD > > where do I go from here? If you complain about having to toss them other people will not give you their's. >if I got a larger HDD installed, would i need to partition it? If you are running the 32-bit version of DR-DOS, the HD size that can be recognized by DR-DOS is considerably larger than 2.1 GB. As I wrote previously, I have two HD's on my P75 (that has an Award BIOS) running M$-DOS 6.22, one is an 840 MB HD installed as the "master" drive and the other is a 30 GB HD installed as a "slave" drive. (A drive is identified as an "only," "master," "slave," or "cable," by the positioning of a jumper on the drive. There generally is a label on the HD and markings on the PC board that show how the jumper is to be installed.) The DriveMax card that I have installed modifies the BIOS on boot so that *the BIOS* (not necessarily the operating system) will recognize up to a 125 GB HD. The 30 GB HD was formated using Partition Magic and all 30 GB are recognized on boot up and by Partition Magic. You can partition each hard drive into a *Primary DOS* partition, and/or an *Extended DOS* partition, each of which can be up to the 2 GB M$-DOS limit if permitted by the BIOS. For example, I have the 840 MB HD partitioned into a Primary (bootable) DOS partition, C:, and an *Extended* DOS partition. The extended DOS partition on the 840 MB HD is further partitioned into *Logical* "drives," D:, E:, F:, G:, H:, I:, J:, and K:. I have part of the 30 GB HD partitioned into an ~2.1 GB *Extended DOS* partition which is further partitioned into *Logical* "drives," L:, M: and N:. DOS will *automatically* assign drive letters, with C: being the first primary partition on the first HD and the successive letters assigned to the logical "drives" on the *Extended* DOS partition. (Caution: If you install another primary partition for whatever OS on a HD, *it* will be identified as D: and all the drive letters in the *Extended DOS* partition will change.) BIG CAUTION: DriveSpace and other drive compression programs create a HIDDEN partition, D:, in which the compressed files are saved, and by smoke and mirrors the other drives are identified as if the hidden D: drive did not exist. This is transparent as you *think* that all your files are on drive C:, when, in fact, only the uncompressed files that you are using are on drive C:. MAKE SURE that you fully understand DriveSpace and what happens if you copy files to another drive; are they copied uncompressed or are they copied as compressed files. If they are copied as compressed files, they may permanently be unusable. Before you do anything, you need to have a greater depth of knowledge of your computer and operating system than it seems you have. I would suggest that you get a copy of Scott Mueller's book, "Upgrading and Repairing PCs," the older the better, and at least prior to the 6th edition, before you start trying to add HD's and copying files from one HD to the other. *I will *try* and get this book... If YES, install the second one and copy all the win 3.11 aplications to the second HD to have the first HD free for DOS only. How to install a second HD: in M$ DOS use FDISK. Jumpers on the 2nd HD set for slave. The new HD must be formated before you can write to it. To avoid problems with Fat16 or FAT32 systems (I suppose you now use FAT16) do not install a HD larger than 2Gb. After you reinstalled the win 3.11 OS you may have trouble with booting up... that problem can be fixed.
