Where on your screen does this message appear ??

I ask this because I just did a search through the Arachne SRC code
for all of these.

find /n "rejecting" *.*

find /n "zero address" *.*

None of those words are to be found anywhere in the SRC code
nor any where in any of the Arachne files.

The only place that those words *are* found is in these email massages.

So my question is:
Since those words are not coming from Arachne.
Where *are* they coming from ???

Hi Michal, Glenn McC., et al,
                              Could this be related
to xswap errors? Maybe the bios are intercepting the
error before Arachne can toss out its' xswap error
message. One reason I suggest this is that the only
thing that seems to lock up my machine anymore is
A's xswap bug and I've never been able to predict
what will cause it. The xswap errors occur infrequently
and randomly but they always nibble away at my RAM
and eventually cause a lock-up.

Strange, really. My CORE.EXE (1.71;UE01, 10 Oct 2002) has this
message at offset 0x32AC2, among other DHCP-related ones.
But DOS FIND doesn't work well with binary files.

They seem to come from CORE.EXE. But why are they there,
if you can't locate them in source code?

No, I don't think it's related to memory management problems.

I did a low level format on a HD and it is unusable ever since :-(((((

You might want to try and run another "low level format" on it - using
utility software you can download probably from HD manufacturer.

As Michal stated and you noticed the hard way, "old fashioned" low level
format isn't good for your poor IDE drives health...

Subject: Re: format and fdisk :-(((

IIRC, the necessity of low level formating was because of the positioning
motor on the HD's reading arm. With MFM and RLL drives, after a while the
arm would not align with the cylinders and a low level format had to be done
to realign the cylinders with the read head.

With the advent of stepper(?) motors, the alignment problems went away and
low level formating wasn't necessary, and as Bastaain demonstrated, even
dangerous.

I have done low level formatting on my MFM drives (with a program from
Gibson Research <www.grc.com> called, "SpinRite"), but never have done it,
nor will I try to do it, on an IDE drive unless the drive has become
completely useless, the information is on another drive, and I just want to
experiment.

I see that there is now a "SpinRite 5.0," but don't know if it will do low
level formating of IDE drives.

OK, I used Norton Utilities to do the search this time
instead of the OpenDos 'find utility'
Ry entire dive.
Now I found it... in wattcp.lib

As you most likely suspected.... It seems to be related to BOOTP/DHCP

Now I wonder if it has something to do with your particular setup
with the mutitasker.

Or is it a bug that's going to be showing up all over the place?

Is there any way for you to run some tests without
the multitasker running ?

I'll try without the Multitasker, PNW Server and ODI drivers at all,
with RTL8029 Packet Driver only. But sometimes it takes hours to
observe the error, so possible absence of problems won't mean that
they were related to my setup...

I was afraid you were going to say that. :(

I was hoping that this was a easy error to duplicate.
But since it sometimes takes hours for the error to show up.

Who knows how long it might take to intentionally cause it to happen???

Please refresh my memory on how your system is setup.

(OS version, memory manager settings, disk cache settings,
packet driver, ODI driver, multitasker, etc... etc...)

I will *try* to duplicate it as closely as possible on my machine.

With both of us trying to duplicate the error.
We might be able to find the cause.

Remember how long it took before I could duplicate that 'lockup'
that *you* fixed in wwwman.exe ???

Lest anyone forget.... Michal fixed that lockup problem. :)

All I did was to assemble *his* ASM code into the finished wwwman.exe

I send my config files via private mail.

interested. Anyone?)

I'm afraid this problem is much harder to solve :(

Hi Sam H., et al,

"emotional inolvement"! Those girlies are just too
