  That's not quite right:

  If a work was published prior to 1978, it was for a period of 28 
years from initial publication.  It was then possible to renew it 
for an additional 47 years, for a total of 75 years after initial 
publication.

  For works created after 1979, and for works created before '78,
but not published, the copyright extends 50 years past the author's
death.
