arachne-digest Sunday, January 23 2000 Volume 01 : Number 963 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 15:56:36 +0000 From: "Michael L. Dawley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Fast Installation! Hello all, Installing 1.60b1 over 1.50 s.r.c: I just realized that I got the 640x480 mode instead of the 800x600 that I tried in setup. When I had 1.50, I had 800x600. I'm using Tseng ET4000, and checked that in setup in the left column, and then checked 800x600 1MB Highcolor in the right column. Didn't get it however, 640x480 was installed. Still works, however, and the graphics part of the setup program in 1.60b1 gives you something to work with whereas 1.50 would require an accurate graphics input during setup or else. Since this box can use 800x600, the graphics in the Arachne browser ie, the X-1, etc. are not quite as crisp looking using 640x480. If all I am concerned with is the 800x600 vs 640x480, would I have any complications returning to Arachne 1.50 by just installing 1.50 in the same directory as though it had an older version there? Also, will the driver for the Tseng ET4000 be placed in later beta's of Arachne? Thanks, Michael L. It's of equal value, but with 32MB you'll be able to use more of your memmory for it (and thereby it will, normally, be faster). I use 32MB of my 64MB for the smartdrv cache - and when I get 128 I'll bet I'll need to find some other program that can accept more than 32MB as cache (96MB for instance - that should really reduce HD access even if I use the computer a whole day). Anyway, depending on what you run (and in this case your settings in Arachne) the ammount of memmory needed by the program differs. But with 32MB I would suspect that at least most of the time 16MB is unused. There are people on this list that probably know much more about this than I do... //Bernie http://hem1.passagen.se/bernie/index.htm DOS programs, Star Wars ... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 17:16:39 -0500 From: Roger Turk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Some bugs Hi Clarence, Clarence Verge wrote: >>I can now confirm that the strange problem Arachne 1.6b1 has with egghead is NOT limited to VGA - it also occurs in EGA. The status bar remains. This page presents NO problem to Arachne 1.50b2.<< I just went to egghead and did not have this problem. I preferred the previous method of returning to the dial-up page when hitting <ALT>H. It was a way of letting me know when I had successfully hung-up. I could always go back to the last loaded page from the dial-up page by hitting <CTRL>LEFT ARROW. I know that Michael P. can't satisfy everyone, so maybe there could be an option in the Setup so that the user could select what he/she wanted; similar to the setup for the ESC key being either "Back" or "Exit." If you don't use a cache, than HDD Access time is independant of tha amount of RAM you have. (eg the same HDD has the same speed on a computer with 512 KB of RAM and 4 GB of RAM) If you use a cache, than a part of memory is used to buffer disk data. The page has not been updated since 30 june 1998. Doszilla seems to be a "dead project". Mozilla is on the other hand a "living, breathing project". (For just about every OS except DOS) But, contrary to someone's contention that the Mozilla project was seperate from Netscape. And that it would be using the original Mozilla code from years ago....... http://www.mozilla.org/ shows that it actually _is_ a "reworking" of Netscape Communicator v5.0 The page clearly states that the project developers are using the code from NS v5.0 In addition, http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/FAQ.html clearly states the the "MozPL" license agreement is a "reworked" version of the NS license. - -- Glenn McCorkle mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] North Jackson, Ohio, USA Arachne, The Web Browser for DOS Open the 'DOOR' to the WWW. I'm trying to use arachne in a fast pc with an external modem and it won't autodetect, so i have to find manually the address of it... To this type of modem (which is standard and dos compatible :) ) the settings are: Product: Cnet model CN5614XE (56 Kbps) Settings: Com port: Com 1 IRQ: Irq 4 This setting is not autodetected by the tool... so i hope this information will be util... Another thing... If you can download any page searcher and try to put in (in the search field) any information, you'll get (and probably not... because not always it will produce) an Xswap illegal allocation (an FATAL ERROR) That's all by now Cheers J. The first time I tried to install it, it worked beatifully on my Compaq Deskpro 4/33i with 8 MB memory. Then for some reason that I can't remember, I rebooted the computer and went into the arachne browser. The problem was that with this particular computer and video card, you have to load VESA drivers everytime you reboot. (I suppose I could get around this by putting it in my autoexec.bat, but I don't use it that often.) Anyway, because VESA wasn't loaded, arachne said that it couldn't recognize the video mode (I had been using VESA before), so it restarted the setup program. I tried to exit the program and did so successfully. Loaded VESA and tried again, but now when I tried to go online, I couldn't access any sites. It said that the site couldn't be found (or something like that) and to check setup. I tried to resetup Arachne numerous times with the same results. I even tried to reinstall and I still get the same message. The one thing that I did notice was that after logging into my ISP, there were 3 lines that said something about Out of bounds error or something along those lines. Does anybody know what I am talking about or could help me? Also, I was thinking that it might be nice if the program, when it couldn't recognize the video mode or something, would ask if you wanted to enter the setup or exit the program. I know that would have saved me a lot of problems right now. I think it is VERY stable although I haven't spent much time online with it yet so I can't say it is bulletproof yet. But, NO CRASHES here ! I've had a chance to try most of the new goodies in this new version and I must say the .BMP generators are GREAT ! Although I don't quite understand what is happening with cntrlP, PrintScreen is terrific - and it works without needing virtual screens. It makes beautiful fullscreen shots including your personal frame setup. Very useful. I have emailed a screenshot to a couple of friends. <g> The cntrlP function does require virtual screens and I found it would not work with the smallest setting of 1000 lines or pixels. That might have been due to the screen I tried to shoot. 2000 and 5000 line virtual screens work fine. But I don't know where the screenshot is supposed to go ! You get the choice to send BMP by email or export BMP. So I pick export BMP. Then you get the dialog boxes: Copy or View file, Send file by email, and Upload file by FTP. So I pick copy file I guess, but the default filename is: C:\ARACHNE\DOWNLOAD\exportbmp.dgi. That seems a bit strange for a default even if you are expected to edit it. Anyway, I took the above default and hit "COPY" for the heck of it. I got NO IDEA where it went. I can't find it. Just like Windows !! I tried again and edited it to C:\ARACHNE\DOWNLOAD\export.bmp. This file was created but had zero bytes in it. :-(( Later, I did find that the file _4prt.bmp which had been 308,278 bytes was now 721,718 bytes, so I took a look at it and it was the original copy of the virtual screen I had been trying to save. <g> Very nice too. This mode saves only the content - not your frame. It certainly is a major step towards giving us a graphic hardcopy function. BTW, this file _4prt.bmp is left in the Arachne ROOT directory. - ------------------------------ I also checked the Xswap debug hotkey. [?] Works fine for me - I found the display to be almost incomprehensible until I read Xswap.txt and found out it was my Xmas present.<G> Thanks, Michael !! I see now that Michael has changed his swapping strategy to allow for many buffers of various sizes having context specifications. I had suggested he needed BIGGER buffers. He countered that he wanted SMALLER buffers. <g> This is probably a very good way to get the best of both worlds. And it should help a great deal in memory clean up and swap. Great idea Michael ! - ------------------------------- I love the new URL entry box you get in fullscreen mode. In fact, I am getting to like fullscreen mode a LOT. It is SUPER for reading email. Just leave your cursor over the TRASH button. Michael, I just wish the fullscreen mode could be made to STICK. If there ever comes a time when scroll bars are no longer required - like the Adobe "grab and move" function, fullscreen will certainly be the way to go. - -------------------------------- Really, I think this version was well worth waiting for. You have to expect a few "snags" when the changes have been so major. Beating Netscape2.02 for load time is a major accomplishment. There was only one graphical browser in the world faster than NS2.02 and that was NS1.1. Great work. Now to try it online and see if it has enough TEFLON to withstand the "java" onslaught! - Clarence Verge - -- - - Help stamp out FATWARE.
