Steve,
NETMASK is used by routing server to separate net-name and machine-name
parts of four byte IP address. E.g. 255.255.255.0 means that first three
bytes of current IP address is the net address and the last fourth byte
is the machine address in that net. 0.0.0.0 netmask means there is the
single greatest net consisting of more then 4 billion machines. I've
never met the using of such netmask but if your local provider uses this
netmask for PPP connections and all is working OK then we have nothing
to do besides to go on our investigatoin.

Yes I did. As I understand, you traced home.freewwweb.com (and others)
from Win95 remote access program/dialer via your home phone but Arachne
can't work properly on the same phone. Is it correct?
I don't know the punctual answers on your questions about proxy/gateway
but we can try to know them together. Do you have TELNET installed with
your Arachne? TELNET will help us to feel network without HTTP using.
One more important question is: can your Win95 TRACEROUTE program handle
with different ports of destination host? I don't use Win95, 98, etc. and
don't know how this program works. In UNIX compatible systems the key -p
is used for this purpose, e.g. traceroute -p [nn] home.freewwweb.com,
where nn is the port number. Try to read the HELP about TRACEROUTE on this
subject or may be somebody in our list knows the answer. The default
port number in TRACEROUTE is 33434, but we need 80 that is used for HTTP.
Sergei.
